eduroam for Users - FAQs

I would like to use eduroam. What should I do?

How to get eduroam on my device?

Get in touch with the IT Services department or helpdesk of your organisation for assistance with configuring your mobile device or laptop for eduroam use. Alternately, go here for more information.

Can anyone use eduroam?

eduroam in Ireland is currently available to most third-level students, staff and researchers. To see if your college/university offers eduroam, visit here or contact the IT department in your organisation.

Is there a list of eduroam locations?

You can find current eduroam locations here. We will update them throughout the year.

Is eduroam safe to use?

eduroam is based on the most secure encryption and authentication standards in existence today. Its security by far exceeds typical commercial hotspots.

eduroam requires the use of 802.1x which provides end-to-end encryption to ensure that your private user credentials are only available to your home institution (your college/university). The certificate of your home institution is the only point you need to trust regardless of who operates any intermediate infrastructure.

Be aware though that when using the general Internet at an eduroam hotspot, the local site security measures at that hotspot will apply to you as well. For example, the firewall settings at the visited place may be different from those you are used to at home, and as a guest, you may have access to fewer services on the Internet than you have at home.

Can college staff access eduroam?

In general, lecturers and college staff from participating institutions can access eduroam. The best thing to do is to get in touch with the IT department in your institution and they will be able to answer your questions about accessing eduroam.

Why eduroam isn’t available near me?

We are working on enabling eduroam in as many places as possible. Keep an eye on our website as we will update the locations throughout the year.
